The Broker Problem: Why Buyers Avoid DRC Copper, and What Fixes It

The Democratic Republic of Congo holds some of the richest copper and cobalt deposits on earth. Yet many of the buyers who need that metal most have learned to stay away. The reason is not the metal. It is the market around it.

The offer every buyer has seen

“99.99% copper cathode, double-digit discount to LME.” It arrives through a chain of intermediaries, each passing on a soft offer from the next. No one in the chain has stood beside the metal. The documents look official until a bank’s compliance team checks them. Then the deal disappears, and another identical offer arrives the following week.

Four reasons serious buyers walk away

1. Chains with no one holding the cargo

Multi-layered broker chains add cost and delay, and leave the buyer with no one accountable for delivery.

2. Documents that cannot be verified

Forged warehouse receipts, falsified assays and simulated container seals are well known in physical metal trading. Experienced buyers now insist on custody proven inside an official warehouse, with a depot reference they can check, before anything moves.

3. Cargo banks will not finance

Many banks decline letters of credit for African-origin minerals because of anti-money-laundering and jurisdiction risk. Without financing, even a genuine cargo cannot be bought.

4. Metal that cannot be traced

Buyers are now purchasing provenance as much as metal. Under rules such as the Swiss due diligence ordinance and EU battery regulation, metal that cannot be traced from mine to market is a liability.

What a fixable supply chain looks like

Each of these problems has a practical answer. Buy from the seller, not a chain. Verify product and custody independently before payment, with funds held in escrow. Contract with an entity and a jurisdiction your bank understands. Demand written due diligence and chain of custody from origin. And ask for performance security on your own contract rather than copies of someone else’s.

How Luxe applies these principles

Luxe Trading USA was built on exactly this model: a Texas company with its own team in Lubumbashi, independent inspection and escrow before payment, OECD-aligned due diligence, and performance bonds on request. Direct from the source. Accountable in the USA.
